I never used regular Fram filter. It was Tough Guard. But yes, I know, it's nowhere near K&N or Mobil 1.
Tough guard is just a slightly better paper..it still sucks right down to the internal construction (even the seals)..Those who hate their car use fram..
I use Castrol 20/50 dino in my track car. Mobil 1 full synthetic 10/40 in my Toyota Tacoma X-Runner an i very rarely tow anything. Castrol and Mobil 1 seem to have the highest ZDDP content out of other oils, yet i still put a bottle of the additive in for good measure. If you ever wanted to see the effects of oils with less ZDDP content, take a sample of your oil and send it to "Blackstone Labs". They will analyze your sample and give you a print out of all of the oils contents.... from the ZDDP content, carbon... all the way to any copper material that is found in bearings on the rotating assembly.
Hmmmm...but even CORVETTEs and PORSCHEs recommend their oil changes with Mobil 1 every 15k miles...maybe they want your car do die after reaching 100k miles mark, so you buy a new one, so "our technicians can have a job"... By they way, if I was you, I'd switch that 10w-40 to 5w-30...unless of course it is required by the manufacturer...
Actually M1 thins down..When I was at SOW a couple of Rotaries and Subies blew their motors due to it Thinning down, its fine until like 6,000 miles or so then it thins in weight or when it heats up it thins more than other oils as well. Most Subie owners won't bring that near their car unless its 10-30 instead of 5-30..Factory spec allows for 5-30 BTW! Actually Supercharged :Manufacturer's make money off of parts and service..not off of the initial sale of the vehicle. Mercedes increased the bar in the 2000's and now its hurting them... I sense Toyota is going to spiral downward real soon due to their newest tactics.
The issue of Quality and R&D was what got the Big 3 in trouble in the first place, Ford is turning around right now..Toyota's new transmissions are sealed (helooooo problems)....Did you see all the noted issues with the new Tundra?
I have used Amsoil for a few years now....told I could run 15,000 with just a filter change at 7500...well i did a few oil analysis with Blackstone..at 7500 mile they told me I could go another 8000-9000 miles no problem as the oil has not broke down and still holds full lubricity...abd the additives are still hi....so I use Amsoil strickly.... Of..at 15,000 miles on the oil my lab report said I was still good to run for another 2500 ..I do not drive the truck hard... I use Pure 1 filters or Motorcraft....both very close according to lab tests truck runs like a dream.... I do add as needed..maybe a quart in 10,000 miles Al
Which formula's are you using, as Amsoil has a few. There are some that have greater OCI than others, most liekly due to various base stocks or additives? Anywho I'm using their XL formula for our daily drivers and will be sending in a sample to have analyzed in the coming weeks.
I am using the XL also..but next change going to try the Signature series....heard great reports on it....heard it has great base oils in it....will see how it tests out Al
