Yes, M3 and RS4 are very direct competitors.

I'd take the RS4 over the M3 any day. Although I do hear the M3 is way more comfortable.

I have never driven an M3, but I have driven an RS4. It's a day I will never forget, that rumble of the non-turbo V8 is fantastic! Apparantly, it has a little switch inside where you can open up the exhaust bypass. OH MY!!!

 

the e9x m3 is pretty darn fun

 

Trust me give the e90 series M3 a chance and it will not disappoint you buddy, trust me.
