I am very happy to say that I will be graduating from the University of Maryland with a degree in Finance in May and its been a really long process of finding a job since not only am I competing against other college grads but also the rest of the "more qualified" economy. I just landed a job with a wealth management firm near me and I am pretty stoked about getting started and to make a life for myself. I am however worried that because I am going into an industry that is hurting (severely), that not many people who have saved their whole lives are going to trust a 22 year old with their money. BUT I will be positive and I will work hard and I am very fortunate to have a career after graduation because a lot of my peers will be graduating jobless. Just thought I would share my good news, now I will have more money to spend on supplies! Expect more orders Phil.
I wish I could say the same . 4 more years!!!!! Congrats! What do you plan on doing with your Finance degree? I'm studying the same.
I decided to do wealth management/financial advising because I like being an entrepreneur and running my own business which I will be able to do now. The firm I will work for is small and isn't tied to any large company like Morgan Stanley or Smith Barney which means higher commissions. We will see how the next year plays out. My best advice about studying to be a finance major is to not over work yourself. I did that and it really affected my grades but once I just relaxed and took everything for what it was it made everything so much easier to comprehend. What you will find is that with all the ratios and stuff you have to learn it can be overwhelming but do not stress out about it. Good luck, I know its a crappy time to be a finance major but we will always be needed somehow.
Right on! :thumb: . FC's can make REALLY good money. When I worked at WellsFargo, the VP of FC's for our region, who was housed in our branch made over $900k in '07 :yikes: . Because they get bonus' for what they invested in, and the profits made. I plan on going in to VC. I already own my own (detailing ) business so the entrepreneur has already come out of me. But my mom's worked in VC and Start-Ups for about 10 years now and I love the environment/gambling . Thanks for the tips! Still in C/C getting my cores done.. can't wait to transfer and get to the interesting stuff. I love crunching numbers as long as there's these two signs involved: $ and % .
Congratulations on graduating, and your already great success in finding a job...it took one of my best friends 9 months to find a job, and i mean just any job...now he is a bank teller with 2 bachelor's degrees, one in finance and another in global business. Im happy for you, because the majority arent so lucky right now....right on!!
Yeah good call, I would love to go into VC I too love gambling and taking risks with business. My ULTIMATE dream would be to have a mixed business of FC/detailing. I would have a flatscreen with MSNBC Money on it and a stock ticker in my garage and I could trade and advise while I am detailing cars AT THE SAME TIME!!! How legit would that be? So in that case if I am advising high net worth clients I can also detail their Ferraris :headbang:
Congrats man. I walk on May 2nd with a degree in Business Management from Florida State. I feel you about the job situation, as I'm jobless. It's tough out there and you're very fortunate to have something waiting for you. Some of my friends had jobs, but then the companies took them away due to the economy.
When you or your friends are jobless graduating college, were you during interships throughout your last two years? I feel like if I don't do those, I'll be jobless as well... but I fully plant to intern through my major courses (junior/senior year) to help solidify a job when I graduate
Congrats. Best of luck and just make sure you're having a good time when you're doing it. You'd be surprised how much better your work turns out and how confident you feel. It's like that with everything, sports, girls, etc. Just have fun.
Internships help, but they're no guarantee. Sometime you'll do an internship and if you perform well enough, you'll be offered a job, sometimes not. My gf's best friend had an internship with PWC and they didn't offer her anything, they even told the interns from the beginning that jobs wouldn't be offered. That was the first time around, I think she was offered something after her second internship though.
It is crazy how many companies are rescinding offers for college grads, has happened to many of my friends too. Not only are people like us competing against other college students but all those who are jobless too, its insane.
Yeah man. It really helps if you know someone that knows someone. That way you have a huge leg up on the competition. It's always been about who you know though....no matter how good the economy is.
The job I just accepted was from an internship that I had for the first half of last year. But thats rare now. I had a friend who was suppose to get a job with UBS and they flew her down to Florida for a meeting with executives and to do some final interviews and introductions and the second she got to the office they turned her away saying they had nothing for her. She had interned for 2 years with them. Alone here at Maryland, the amount of companies that are looking for students is 1/3 the volume it was last year. I am noticing people are going to small firms/companies. The firm I will be working for has 10 employees.
Its hard too at this point because you want to accept anything that comes your way but you also do not want to sell yourself short based on the education and degree you received. That is what I struggled with for awhile.
