Long story short I'm looking for new/better anti-virus software than the corporate edition of Symmantec. I've narrowed my choices to either NOD32 or AVG, any input on either of these programs would be greatly appreciated.

I've used all the above listed and several more. I've been using AVG for about 2 years now and haven't had a virus since... and it's free :). You may also want to check out Avast avast! - Download antivirus software for spyware and virus protection. It's a great program and best of all it's free. I stopped using Avast because there was a compatibility problem with my video card.

AVG hands down, free and it works! Doesn't take up system resources like other anti-virus programs.

Are you comparing the retail NOD32 to the free AVG? if so there is no comparison NOD32 is a far superior product, especially if you look at ESET Smart Security. If you are just looking at free AV then Avast!. AVG is having issues with V8. I have a client that has retail AVG installed and was having system problems. When I scanned their system with NOD32 demo it found viruses that were missed by AVG.

When I used windows NOD32 was what I used! It is great, but sort of memory hungry.

    What are the messages?

My guess is that Windows keeps restoring the virus from System Restore. Turn System Restore off, re-scan with NOD32, then re-enable System Restore.

Turn System Restore off in Windows XP

Right-click the My Computer icon on desktop and select Properties
On the System Restore tab, tick the Turn off System Restore on all Drives check-box
Click OK, close and reboot system

All of the files in the System Volume Information folder with all restore points will be deleted. After you re-enable this feature (strongly recommended), a new restore point will be created.

That is quite the opposite of my experience. NOD32 has the smallest footprint both on the disc and in resources of any AV I have deployed.

The new norton 2009 internet security recieved maxium pc kick ass award and also pc mag award .I bought the Three pc users and it does kick ass.It uses about 70% less resources that's the best also updates are done always in the backround.I suggest you go to maxium pc site and read up on it.

I currently use AVG but for some reason I don't think it's really doing all that mucn. I like the above news on Norton 2009, might have to look at that!

If you are spending money I would look at NOD32, BitDefender maybe even Kaspersky before AVG.

As Harleyguy wrote the new version of Norton is highly rated, but after the debacle of the last few versions I have looked to other vendors.

why don't you check if your internet privider provides you with a free copy. I have Comcast cable HSI and they gave me McAffee...It works good enough, $120 annual value for free...
There goes $120 in car care products...

I gave up my free copies of Norton to use the one i just paid for.I get plenty of programs for free ,From os's to just about anything. When i saw the reviews on it i bit the bullet and laid out the 50 bucks from costco i hate to pay for software but so far very happy .

I was running the corporate edition of Symantec through the university but it must have been on lunch break when I got infected two weeks ago. Spent 12+ hours last saturday trying to recover my OS but the damn virus was effective and eventually I just gave up and reformatted. I look at it this way, if I have to fork over $50.00/year for more effective computer security I've got no problem doing so considering the headache I will save.

Verizon does offer McAfee but charges $60.00/year and I found their software to be a bit of a hassle to use last go round.

Thanks for all of your input guys.
