Well remember how I told you guys I was registered on a photography course. Well I've had two classes already and we've had our first field trip. The course I'm currently registered in is sports photography, so from what I can gather it's about capturing the moment, trap focusing, giving images that speed effect...meaning blur effect. How to set up to capture that perfect shot. Now, I'm no where near perfection but at least I'm learning to familiarize my self with shutter speed, aperture, ISO, White Balance and panning. I didn't realize how difficult panning can be.

Any who, we had our first field trip. We went to the Olympic Oval where speed scatters were practicing. It was quite the eye opening for me as I've never seen such an event up close, not to mention the individuals participating are in incredible shape.

Oh and if you look close enough in the background you'll see a bunch of people taking photos, that's the rest of the class :thumb: One of the class mates had a wicked lens, if I remember correctly it's this one here:
Canon EF 100-400 mm F4.5-5.6L IS USM

Looks like a very cool lens.

Any who just thought I'd share some pictures with you, hope you enjoy:

All pictures were taken with my Canon 24-105 mm f4 L IS lens, I played around with the ISO and I ended up using 1600 and the fastest shutter speed the lens would give me f4.

Well it was a very educational day, by the end of the 'field' trip I started to get a little more comfortable with my camera and adjusting speed and aperture...but I still have a long way to go. Good thing I've signed up for several other classes as well.

Well hope you enjoy the pictures oh and I took over 300 pictures and out of all those these ones here are the best ones...well at least reasonably in focus

Looking good Carlos. I'm new to dSLR's myself and i've been reading about shutter speed, apeture and all those other terms. Kinda hard to keep up with.

Which Canon camera do you have??
Those L lenses are suppose to be really awesome.

Well I only have the entri level, I purchased the Canon XTi Rebel and upgraded the lens with the L lens. For me going from the standard lens to the L lens I noticed a huge difference. One thing to note "L" lenses are not cheap at all.

Take your time with photography, it took me two years to finally realize I need to take some classes...for me it was time to move on to the next level in photography...I still consider it a hobby...but I want to improve my skills that's all.

Well slowly I'm learning, didn't realize how much skill it took to take good quality pictures...but in time I will get the hang of it. Man your one lucky guy with the girl you got :applause: I've read some good things about the XSi :thumb:

Oooh that's the other lens I've been reading up on, very good lens...when you get it let me know how you like it and what you think of it please :peace:

I use to have the 100- 400L. Not a very good lens for inside shooting unless you can shoot at a high ISO.

Yes, that's why I'm so hesitant about purchasing another lens with such a large range of zoom. I'm enjoying the panning shots or the trap focusing shots so I can see where a 100-400mm lens could come in handy...but it depends if I'm seriously going to continue shooting fast moving objects...I've got some friends who do some track events, I can see my self using such a lens...but all in good time I suppose, for now I'm still reading up on several lenses.

I'd love to get the following lenses:
    • Canon EF 50mm F1.2 L USM Lens
    • Canon EF 85mm F1.2 L II USM Lens

But I've never used a fixed lens, I don't know what they are like...I'm going to see if I can rent one for a day to fool around with it and see if I like it or not.

But for now money is tight, so I can't be spending too much on hobbies...maybe at the end of the year or for my b-day I might treat my self but I'm in no rush, learning one thing at a time for now :thumb:

Thank you for the feed back :peace:

To be honest I wasn't too sure about taking the photography class but I got to the point where all the reading and re-searching I was doing was going in one ear and existing out the other...the class and the field trip make the 'theory' part much more enjoyable. I'm glad I've signed up to several classes :thumb:

Im in the same boat.....I can read all friggin day and think I have it, untill it comes time to put what Ive read to use. Im a hands on kinda person...I learn faster and get a better understanding of why things are the way they are by having someone with the knowledge beside me.

Can you PM me what the classes cost you?

 I'm the same way, I'm a hands on learner, I enjoy theory but theory can only take me so far

As for the price of the classes, I'm taking them at SAIT and the classes average about $200.00 per class, quite reasonable if you ask me. The current class I'm in has two field trips in it :thumb: I personally think the field trips are well worth it, it's where you put all that class time to practice, my kind of edumacation :thumb:
