What backing plates does everyone use? Specify if for DA or Rotary. Anyone use the ones from Meguiars? I use the ones from LC, bought from autogeek.net. Not sure which ones I'll be getting when I get a rotary.
I'm a Megs man i'll be honest. So my opionon is slanted  You can't go wrong with there products. But it's not as thick as the 3M bp.
I like meg's stuff too, but use a lot of other brands as well. maybe I'll give it a go when I get a rotary.
Ya me too.I'm not one sided. But I really do like their products. Good luck. You wont be disappointed.:thumb:
Meg's W66 backing plate is nice; however, it is designed for the 7" pads from their Solo line. The minimum pad size for this plate would be 6.5". Their W65 backing plate is nice; however, it has a self centering circular extension in the middle; it can present problems when your not using the Meg's Mirror Glaze self-centering pads. I had to use a Dremel and grinding stone to remove this piece. Additionally, the W65 backing plate is fairly rigid. I recently purchased the 3M backing plate available at Detailer's Domain and enjoy using it; it really does outperform the Meg's plates IMO; the pliability of the yellow padding reduces buffer hop and makes transitioning on contours much smoother and safer. I realize the 3M plates are pricey; however, I spent more in the long run buying a number of plates I was not satisfied with.
I have 2 of the 3M with yellow foam bps and I also have the Scholl Concepts bp which is very similar to the 3M only the foam is softer and more pliable. I like the Scholl Concept one better but you do need an adapter to go from M14 threads to 5/8" threads.
I'm sure you guys know what I use but I'll share anyways...I use the rotary, only rotary and the backing plates I use are the 3M UK Yellow and Gray backing plates. I use these backing plates with just about every type of pad even wool pads.
Where do you guys get the gray 3M backing plate? What are the benefits of it over the yellow 3M backing plate? I believe I've heard the gray is ideal for polishing while the yellow is best suited for cutting; is this true?
How does the different backing pad affect the polishing process? I am using the Autoglym back plate but going to get some LC pad soon. Can I use it together or should I buy the LC backplate?
Just to clarify things, you don't polish with backing plates, the backing plate is what your foam or wool pad attaches to. I think the color of foam attached to the backing plate just determines how flexible the foam is, i don't think it really matters, I'm sure it's just personal preference.
As long as the Autoglym backing plate uses a hook and loop attachment medium, you should be able to use it in conjunction with the LC pads. Evidently, the size of the Autoglym backing plate will also dictate pad size. In my experience, backing plates impact the frequency of buffer hob and the ability to safely polish contours. Rigid backing plates are best suited for removal of sanding scratches and full scale compounding. Supple backing plates are ideal for intermediate compounding, polishing, and jeweling. Again, this is simply my two cents; I own and have used the following backing plates: Makita 6.5" stock backing plate, Buff N Shine 5.5" backing plate, Meg's W65 5.25", Meg's W66 5.75", and 3M 09953 125mm (4.92") backing plate. Hope this helps.
Um...there are a few UK dealers that sell these pads but you rarely see them. As to the differences, the gray backing plate is much, much softer and it's true it is ideal for finishing wile the yellow is harder and a very well built backing plate for compounding..well all round polishing to be honest. Both backing plates are great, but if I had to choose one backing plate I would stick with the yellow one.
